Dimensional Energy Awarded $3.1M ARPA-E Grant
Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) awarded $7 million in federal grants to Cornell researchers, including $3.1 million for Dimensional Energy, a Cornell startup and Rev: Ithaca Startup Works member.
The awards are intended to fund technologies that support fresh approaches to clean energy challenges as part of the ARPA-E OPEN 2021 program, which distributed a total of $175 million to 66 recipients across 22 states.
The funding Dimensional Energy received will go toward the use of additive manufacturing systems to 3D print ceramic components for innovative chemical reactors that can run on low-carbon electricity sources. Dimensional Energy’s innovative reactors convert carbon dioxide into a feedstock chemical that can be further processed into a low-carbon, synthetic jet fuel, thereby providing low-carbon sustainable aviation fuel to the aviation sector that accounts for nearly 3% of global annual emissions.
Last year, Dimensional Energy received $2.7 million in funding through the U.S. Department of Energy, as well as a $50,000 investment from Ithaca Area Economic Development. The startup was also a finalist in the $20 million Carbon X Prize competition.
Senator Charles Schumer, who announced the grants on Feb. 16, said in a statement that the cutting-edge research being conducted at Cornell and in Ithaca is integral to the fight against climate change.
“I am proud to deliver this $7 million federal investment that will supercharge our efforts to deliver critical clean energy solutions and create good paying jobs right here in upstate New York,” Schumer said.
